4-Day Tour from Fes to Merzouga Desert

Today we will depart Fes in the morning, heading into the Middle Atlas via Ifrane, the curious alpine-style town built by the French in the 1930s, and the Azrou Cedar Forest, home to some of the largest Atlas cedars in the world and a resident troop of wild Barbary macaques, where we stop to walk among the ancient trees. Continuing south past Midelt for lunch, rather than heading directly toward Merzouga via the Ziz Valley, this fuller itinerary first takes us toward Tinghir and Todra Gorge, one of Morocco's most dramatic natural landmarks, where sheer pink and orange limestone cliffs rise up to 300 metres on either side of a narrow canyon in places barely 10 metres wide. We stop for an hour or so for a walk along the canyon floor and photographs of the towering walls, a popular spot for rock climbers from around the world, before continuing the final stretch to Merzouga as the afternoon light softens, arriving in time for a sunset camel trek across the dunes to our desert camp, followed by a traditional dinner and an evening of Berber music around the campfire under the stars. Lunch en route is usually taken in Midelt, breaking up the long drive between the cedar forests and Todra Gorge.

This morning offers the option to wake before dawn and climb a nearby dune in the dark to watch the sunrise transform the desert from soft pink to deep gold. Afterwards, enjoy a relaxed Berber breakfast at camp with time to simply take in the scenery before the desert heat builds. With two full nights in the dunes on this itinerary, today is deliberately unhurried: optional activities can be arranged locally, including a visit to a nearby Berber family for tea and conversation about desert life, a short 4x4 excursion further into the dune sea, or a stop at Khamlia village to hear traditional Gnaoua music performed by descendants of West African migrants. As the second evening approaches, we again watch the sun set over the dunes before another traditional dinner and a further night of music and stars, giving you genuine time to properly absorb the scale and silence of the Sahara. Lunch today is typically a relaxed affair back at camp, a proper midday break in the middle of this unhurried second desert day.

After a final Berber breakfast at camp, we say goodbye to our camel guides and drive back to Merzouga village by 4x4, where your driver awaits. Rather than retracing the Todra Gorge route, we take the more direct Ziz Valley road back toward the Middle Atlas, a ribbon of palm groves and mudbrick ksour villages winding through an otherwise barren landscape, with photo stops at panoramic viewpoints along the way. We overnight in Midelt, a former mining town and gateway between the High and Middle Atlas ranges, breaking up the return journey and allowing a more relaxed final day tomorrow. Lunch en route to Midelt is usually a simple stop along the Ziz Valley road, a scenic break on the return journey.

After breakfast, we complete the journey back to Fes, retracing the Middle Atlas route through Azrou and Ifrane, with the option of a final, brief stop in the cedar forest if you'd like another chance to see the Barbary macaques. We arrive back in Fes by the early-to-mid afternoon. Over these four days, you will have crossed the Middle Atlas through cedar forests inhabited by wild Barbary apes, walked beneath the towering cliffs of Todra Gorge, spent two full nights immersed in the dunes of Erg Chebbi, and returned via the striking Ziz Valley oasis — a fuller, richer Fes-to-Merzouga experience than a quick two or three-day version, with genuine time to properly enjoy the Sahara.
